Mortenson Builds Sixth Wind Project in Golden State

Minneapolis MN (SPX) Jun 03, 2011

With 100 percent of Mortenson's business in the power sector coming from renewable energy, Engineering News-Record ranked Mortenson the 11th largest power contractor in the U.S. for 2010.

Coram California Development, owned by Brookfield Renewable Power (Brookfield) and Coram California Development Management, LLC (CCDM) has recently selected Mortenson, a leading North American renewable energy contractor, for the construction of a 102-megawatt Wind Project located near Tehachapi, California. The project will use 34 3-megawatt Vestas turbines.

Mortenson is responsible for the design and construction of access roads, foundations, turbine transportation and erection, overhead and underground collection, overhead and underground transmission line, two 66kV substations and an O and M building. Construction began earlier this month and is expected to be complete by March, 2012.

Located in Kern County, a community well-known for its commitment to renewable energy, Mortenson will play a leadership role in the hiring of approximately 100 on-site personnel during peak construction.

"Our relationship with Brookfield and CCDM is rooted in our mutual investments in the communities in which we work. We look forward to building partnerships with local individuals, businesses and the broader community," said Kevin Deters, a general manager with Mortenson's Renewable Energy Groups.

This Wind Project is the 6th wind power facility that Mortenson has constructed in the state of California, providing 488-megawatts of clean energy.

According to the American Wind Energy Association, California ranks third nationally in terms of overall wind installation, behind Texas and Iowa, with 3,177 megawatts online at the end of 2010. The Tehachapi region alone will produce as much energy as is generated by California's Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, stated by the California Wind Energy Association.

Since entering the renewable energy market in 1995, Mortenson Construction has become a leading builder of wind power facilities in North America, constructing 100 wind projects and erecting 7,000 wind turbines across the United States and Canada.

With 100 percent of Mortenson's business in the power sector coming from renewable energy, Engineering News-Record ranked Mortenson the 11th largest power contractor in the U.S. for 2010. In addition to wind power, Mortenson's Renewable Energy Groups, also construct facilities that generate solar power, biofuels and hydro-electric power.

Australian study into wind turbine noise
Adelaide, Australia (UPI) Jun 1, 2011
Australian acoustics researchers say they are investigating the causes of wind turbine noise with the aim of making them quieter. Scientists at the University of Adelaide said wind turbines generate "trailing edge or airfoil noise," the same kind of noise generated at the edge of aircraft wings. "We know generally what causes that noise - as the turbulent air flows over the shar ... read more
